Cross-party messages of support for Llantwit Major on 25th March 2023

Jane Hutt MS, Welsh Labour

“I would  like to give my heartfelt thanks to all those who have spoken of their support for Ukrainian refugees, including Llantwit Major AFC welcoming their support for Ukrainian players and supporters as they say: ‘They, and anyone else who wants to call Llantwit home, will always be welcome at our football club, racism and hatred will not.’

“I recently met with the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Police to discuss the prospect of a protest against the Eagleswell Road plans and was reassured by the response that any event of this kind would be handled professionally and sensitively.

“I am also pleased to report that I have been working with local councillors and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to make the case for a new health centre in Llantwit Major. I was pleased to join councillors on a visit organised by the health board to the new Llanedeyrn Health and Well-Being Centre which could be a model for a centre in Llantwit.

“It was a very encouraging visit and we are following this up with the Vale Council, regarding the Eagleswell Road site. I welcome the Vale Council’s commitment to continue discussions about the use of some or all of the site for a new health centre for Llantwit Major.”

Andrew RT Davies MS, Welsh Conservatives

"In Llantwit, the names of those from our town who gave their lives fighting for our country and our values are engraved on the cenotaph. It is a timely reminder of our values and what we stand for.

"Extremists are not welcome in our town. We must not let them use residents' legitimate concerns about our much-needed health centre to push their agenda in this way."

Mark Hooper, Plaid Cymru

"Our communities here in the Vale stand for hope over hate, tolerance over bigotry and dignity over division. In a complicated world, we can and must simplify our response to those people whose need is greater and more desperate than we will fully understand. They are welcome, and we will keep them safe.

“Plaid Cymru welcomes the Welsh Government's support for those Ukrainians in need, and add our voice to the calls for the development of health centre provision in Llantwit Major to be accelerated."
